Invasive Plants We Control Across
Pennsylvania, West Virginia & Ohio
Every invasive species behaves differently. Some spread by root, some by seed, and some come back stronger after they are cut. That is why we build a control plan around the plant, not just the property. Below are the invasives our crews treat most often on utility corridors, industrial sites, reclaimed land, and commercial properties.
Japanese Knotweed Control
Japanese knotweed (Reynoutria japonica), often mistaken for bamboo, is one of the most aggressive invasives in Western Pennsylvania. Its underground rhizome network can push through asphalt, crack foundations and retaining walls, and take over entire stream banks. When it dies back in winter, those banks are left bare and prone to erosion. Mowing or digging usually spreads it further, because small root fragments start new plants. We treat knotweed with a multi-year herbicide program.
Bush Honeysuckle Removal
Amur, Morrow's, and Tatarian honeysuckle form dense understory thickets along forest edges, rights-of-way, and abandoned fields. They leaf out earlier and hold their leaves later than native plants, which shades out tree seedlings and stops forest regeneration. We use forestry mulching for heavy stands, then follow up with cut-stump, basal bark, or late-season foliar treatment to stop regrowth.
Multiflora Rose Control
Multiflora rose is on Pennsylvania's Noxious Weed Control List. It creates thorny, impassable thickets that block right-of-way access, pastures, and reclamation sites. Birds spread its seeds, which can stay viable in the soil for years. Control usually means mechanical clearing followed by targeted herbicide over several seasons.
Autumn Olive Removal
Autumn olive was once planted widely for wildlife cover and mine reclamation. Today it dominates reclaimed mine land, pipeline corridors, and utility rights-of-way throughout Pennsylvania and West Virginia. It adds nitrogen to the soil, which favors more invasives over native species. It also resprouts aggressively after cutting, so we pair removal with cut-stump or basal bark treatment for lasting results.
Privet Control
Privet (Ligustrum spp.) escaped from hedges and landscaping and now forms dense, semi-evergreen thickets in floodplains and woodlots. Once established, it crowds out native shrubs and wildflowers. It responds well to a combination of mechanical removal and targeted herbicide.
Phragmites Control
The non-native form of common reed (Phragmites australis) can grow over 12 feet tall and forms solid stands in wetlands, drainage ditches, and stormwater basins. In basins it reduces storage capacity, clogs outlet structures, hides debris, and becomes a fire hazard when dry. Our licensed applicators use aquatic-approved herbicides, followed by cutting or mowing of the dead stems.
Tree-of-Heaven Removal
Tree-of-heaven (Ailanthus altissima) is the preferred host of the spotted lanternfly, which makes it a top priority across Pennsylvania. It grows fast, spreads through root suckers, and releases chemicals that suppress nearby plants. Cutting it down alone backfires, because each stump sends up dozens of new sprouts. We treat Ailanthus with hack-and-squirt or basal bark methods before any removal, so it does not come back.
Oriental Bittersweet Control
Oriental bittersweet is a woody vine that climbs, strangles, and girdles trees. Its weight, especially under snow and ice, brings down trees along roads, fencelines, and power lines. We cut vines at the base and treat the stumps to kill the root system, protecting both tree health and nearby infrastructure.
Mile-a-Minute Vine Control
Mile-a-minute (Persicaria perfoliata) is on Pennsylvania's Noxious Weed Control List. It is a barbed annual vine that can grow several inches a day, smothering stream banks, forest edges, and new tree plantings. Because it spreads by seed, timing is critical: we control it in early summer, before it begins setting seed.
Kudzu Removal
Kudzu is on Pennsylvania's Noxious Weed Control List and is established in southern Pennsylvania and West Virginia. It can grow up to a foot a day in summer and blankets trees, slopes, and structures. Its large root crowns make it one of the hardest invasives to eliminate. We use a multi-year herbicide program with follow-up monitoring.
Callery (Bradford) Pear Removal
Callery pear, including the Bradford pear, is now regulated in Pennsylvania and can no longer be sold. Escaped trees are spreading quickly along highway edges, rights-of-way, and old fields, forming thorny thickets that crowd out native growth. We remove existing trees and treat stumps and seedlings to stop them from coming back.
Japanese Barberry Removal
Japanese barberry is regulated in Pennsylvania and banned from sale. Its dense, thorny thickets hold high humidity at ground level, creating ideal habitat for ticks. That makes it a real concern on commercial campuses, parks, and community properties. We remove established stands and treat regrowth.
Giant Hogweed Removal
Giant hogweed is a federally regulated noxious weed. It can reach 14 feet tall, and its sap can cause severe burns and blistering when skin is exposed to sunlight. Never attempt to remove it without protective equipment. Our trained crews handle giant hogweed with full PPE, and sightings should also be reported to the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.
Purple Loosestrife Control
Purple loosestrife is on Pennsylvania's Noxious Weed Control List. It takes over wetlands, pond edges, and wet meadows, replacing native plants that wildlife depend on. We treat it with aquatic-approved herbicides during flowering, before it releases its seed.
Poison Hemlock & Wild Parsnip Control
Poison hemlock is highly toxic if eaten, and wild parsnip sap causes burns similar to giant hogweed. Both are spreading along roadsides, trails, and rights-of-way, creating real hazards for the public and for maintenance crews. We treat them at the rosette stage, before they bolt and flower.
